Jeff & The Barberian Man

In a world where masculinity is being re-examined, Jeff Young offers a refreshing perspective. He believes that modern masculinity isn’t about dominance but about using one’s strength responsibly. “I think we all have a certain amount of power, and we should have an equal amount of responsibility to support people around us,” he explains. His focus is on empowering others and fostering a sense of community, which creates a richer and safer environment for all. This philosophy encourages men to use their strength not for control, but to uplift those around them.

Having worked as a family therapist, Jeff understands the complexities of masculinity. Reflecting on his father, he says, “I was lucky. My dad, for his era, was sort of both a man’s man, but also very sensitive.” This balance allowed him to embrace masculinity without feeling constrained by traditional stereotypes. He believes that the core values of masculinity include loyalty, courage, and thoughtfulness—qualities that promote genuine connections. These are not just admirable traits but essential for building meaningful relationships, both personally and within society.

Jeff’s approach to therapy also touches on the challenges men often face when dealing with emotions. He acknowledges that men might not naturally gravitate towards therapy, but advocates for a straightforward approach: “Being upfront and honest and direct is actually a much better way of gaining the trust of people who don’t want to be in therapy.” His philosophy echoes his friend’s sentiment: “With men, you can be overt about emotions, if not overtly emotional.” This distinction helps men process emotions without feeling overwhelmed or powerless, encouraging a healthy relationship with emotional expression.

Looking to the future, Jeff is optimistic about the evolution of masculinity. He praises the increasing freedom men have today, noting that younger generations are less restricted by gender stereotypes. His hope is for a stronger, positive narrative about masculinity—one that embraces power with responsibility. “As that sort of grows, you know, we have an empowered community,” he reflects. This vision for modern masculinity fosters a culture of mutual support, connection, and growth, where strength is used to build, not to break.
